Laius is a powerfully built member of Unit J who has a vibrant, youthful countenance. She gave birth to a healthy, vivacious male calf in 2021.
Like other whales in her social group, Laius spends a great deal of time with members of Unit D. She and Jocasta, whose calf is nearly the same age, often share parental responsibilities with Drop from Unit D who is also a new mother.
The proud new mother was frequently seen swimming with her young calf during our 2021 and 2022 field sessions. We were able to document Laius nursing her calf on one of our swim-along encounters in 2022.
