Mother: Unknown

Jocasta is a matriarchal figure within Unit J. She has been a mother on two occasions having given birth to Oedipus prior to 2005, and Antigone in 2009. She appears to have welcomed yet another calf in 2021. We have documented the little whale swimming in tandem with Jocasta during both of our 2021 and 2022 field sessions.

At the time of our data collections, Jocasta has consistently kept her distance from underwater researchers. She appears to be deeply committed to her parental responsibilities, as we have always encountered her in the company of her calf.

In 2021, we able to verify her positive identify only after close inspection of our video footage. The following year, we were able to collect imagery of she and her calf amid rough sea conditions when the pair sped past at a brisk pace.

Right pectoral fin has been bitten
Smooth underside, no obvious markings
Relatively clean fluke edges
