Drop is a confident, playful, and gregarious member of Unit R. She is the daughter of Drifter and we believe her to be a new mother as of 2021.
We documented Drop on three days during our 2021 field season. She was initially observed swimming among a mixed group of calves and juveniles during an extended socialization session with whales from Units A and R. Between rest stops, she traveled with a small calf whom we assume to be her offspring.
A few days later she was seen accompanied by the small calf who remained closely by her side. The following morning we encountered Drop caretaking three young whales including her calf. She nudged the little whales along as they spun around her in a lovingly tactile tangle.
Smooth pectoral fins, no facial markings
Smooth underside, no obvious markings
Distinct small round bites on left fluke
