Drifter has the longest recorded photo identification history of the sperm whales who have been studied off the coast of Dominica. She was first photographed by researchers in 1984.
We caught a quick glimpse of Drifter mingling with members of her group who were socializing with whales from Unit A on November 22, 2021. She was encapsulated by other whales and we were able to confirm positive identification only after close review of our video content.
Smooth pectoral fins, no facial markings
