Aurora
Female, Unit A

Born: 2016
Mother: Lady Oracle

Born: 2016
Mother: Lady Oracle

Aurora is the oldest, boldest and most independent of the young whales born between 2016 and 2018. She was initially more cautious than the other calves, however upon subsequent sightings she rapidly became the most playful of the interactive trio. Confident and inquisitive, as a calf she often instigated periods of raucous play with her calf-mates.

When we observed her in 2018, Aurora consistently exercised a higher level of social discernment compared to the other calves. She was intent upon making distinct impressions through specific actions toward individual humans. We found her interactions with us to be very personal in nature. While she enjoyed recognition from onlookers, Aurora did not need to be the center of attention.

In 2019 she again showed a great deal of interest in researchers, often approaching us for attention. Her playful, gregarious comportment was congruent with her behavior the previous year.

When we saw her in 2021, Aurora was a healthy, strong-willed juvenile who regularly fluked, foraged, and breached with confidence. She was less active than her younger friends during sleep cycles and often settled slightly deeper among the older adults. She was no longer as interested in humans, and Accra remained her closest companion.

Aurora was relaxed in the presence of her family members when we documented her in 2022, however she rarely swam close to us on her own. She had recently been tagged for research by CETI, as can be seen in images from that year. We observed her traveling and sleeping with members of her family, often tucked near to her mother Lady Oracle and brother Allan. During one memorable pass, she glided nearby in her signature upside-down position. Aurora and Accra continued to be best friends.

Smooth pectoral fins, no facial markings
Tiny white spot at naval, two marks under genitals
Nicks on left fluke tip, subtle scallop on right fluke
